The Harry Potter series could break its own record with its sixth title due for release July 16. Nearly three weeks before the release date, online store Amazon.com said it had already received 1 million pre-orders for the next J. K. Rowling book.
Titled ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’, the book has kicked up enough hype and excitement to make its publisher Bloomsbury optimistic. The company had made good progress since the start of the year and their publishing programme for the second half was also expected to get off with a great start – Rowling’s sixth book. The level of anticipation for the book was very much in line with their expectations.
The previous book ‘The Order of the Phoenix’ had made history of sorts for Amazon which declared it as its best selling item ever. Both, the children's and adults' versions, have been on the top of Amazon's Hot 100 sales chart since its launch last December.
This time round, they expect pre-orders to cross 1.3 million – the record set by ‘The Order’. Critics and fans were unanimous in their opinion. The Harry Potter series is successful beyond hyperbolic description.
Each time a title hits the bookstands, there is virtually a stampede for a copy. ‘The Order of the Phoenix’ had sold 5 million copies in just 24 hours, setting a new record.
Whether it is the publicity machinery that is working up the hype or it is, as an avid 14-year-old fan said “pure Potter magic”, the books sell and sell and then, sell some more. The publishers are hopeful that the Potter fever will also push sales for some of Harry Potter’s earlier titles.
Amazon is offering the next Potter book at an attractive discount of 47 percent slashing its price from £16.99 to £8.99.
