LONDON: The latest entrant to the ISP market – Be has decided to capitalize on the current deregulation in the market by launching 24 megabyte broadband service. The service will be available to Londoners to begin with, and then extended to cover the rest of the UK.
With this 24 Meg service, Boris Ivanovich, co-founder of Be Unlimited, hopes to repeat the success he achieved in Sweden with Bostream in April 2001. In just three years’ time, Bostream’s customer base grew from 2000 to 100,000 and revenues jumped from £0.5 million to £30.8 million.
At 24 MBps, Be will be the fastest Internet Service Provider in the UK with triple the speed of the current leader. For Be, the process of bringing the service to the UK simply means deploying its own network using the Local Loop Unbundling (LLU) as allowed by the EU. According to the EU directive, independent operators can lease British Telecom’s last mile access infrastructure. Be will install its own kit in BT’s exchanges and through them provide broadband directly to their own customers.
Be will be employing Alcatel’s latest generation DSLAM technology to double the download bandwidth. A spokesperson said that Be’s experience with standardization bodies and Alcatel’s innovation in R & D, is sure to prove a winning combination.
The ambitious start-up promises to provide a product that is superior to any that is offered by its competitors in the UK.
Customers will be able to get full capability of ADSL2+ right from launch. The company sees no reason to roll out internet speed in steps of 1 meg, 2 meg and so on, when they have the full capability to offer the maximum speeds. The Be service would also be most affordable, the spokesman said.
Be was established in London in October 2004 with the working name Avatar Broadband Ltd.
