ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AFX) - Temperatures have dropped, so gas bills have gone up.Public Service Company of New Mexico estimates that its customers used 26 percent more gas in January 2007 than they did in January 2006.The higher consumption means the average January heating bill is expected to be about 7 percent higher than a year ago -- $151.80 compared to $142.11 in January 2006.Natural gas cost 79 cents per therm in January -- which PNM has said is 8.4 percent less than in December and 18.8 percent lower than in January 2006.PNM said that in February, gas will go up to 81 cents per therm, a heating unit equivalent to 100 cubic feet of natural gas.The utility estimates the average heating bill for the entire winter will total $570.Low-income New Mexicans can get help paying their heating bills through the Low Income Energy Assistance Program.Copyright 2006 Associated Press.
