SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AFX) - Magma Design Automation Inc., a maker of semiconductor design software, said Thursday a U.S. District Court in California ruled that two disputed patents in an infringement case filed by Synopsys Inc. are shared by Synopsys and Magma partner IBM Corp.In a 2004 licensing agreement, Magma Designs and IBM granted each other rights to electronic design automation patents, which would give Magma licensing rights to two of the patents in question, according to the company. The third contested patent was ruled to be solely owned by Synopsys. While Magma said it is 'extremely pleased' with the ruling, in a separate announcement, Synopsys said the ruling 'clearly demonstrates that Magma built their products on technology they do not own.''The court's ruling confirms that Magma misappropriated 73 patented inventions, and rejects Magma's previous argument that it had any ownership interest in these inventions. With clear ownership established, we can now move to the infringement phase of this case,' said Brian Cabrera, general counsel for Synopsys.Synopsys said the court ruled that although two contested patents are jointly owned by IBM and Magma, Magma does not have any ownership interest in the patents.Synopsys first filed the patent infringement federal lawsuit against Magma in 2004.Shares of Synopsys were up 5 cents at $26.65 in morning trading on the Nasdaq, while Magma shares shot up $1.41, or 16.6 percent, to $9.91 on the Nasdaq.Copyright 2006 Associated Press.
