Ranbaxy receives OK for generic Valtrex |

NEW YORK (AFX) - A unit of India-based Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd., said Thursday it got final Food and Drug Administration approval for its generic version of Valtrex caplets.Valtrex, a shingles and genital herpes treatment, is made by GlaxoSmithKline. The FDA approval covers 500-milligram and 1-gram caplets of valacyclovir hydrochloride tablets, said Ranbaxy Pharmaceutical Inc.U.S. sales of Valtrex for the nine months ended Sept. 30 totaled $819 million, according to GlaxoSmithKline.Mylan Laboratories Inc. received tentative approval Wednesday for its generic version of Valtrex, specifically for 500-milligram and 1000-milligram tablets. It was given only tentative approval, the company said, because patents for Valtrex do not start to expire until June 2009.Shares of GlaxoSmithKline rose 60 cents to $54.75 on the New York Stock Exchange in midday trading.
