DEARBORN, Mich. (AFX) - Ford Motor Co. said Thursday its January U.S. sales fell, mainly as a result of a planned 65 percent drop in sales to daily rental companies.Ford's sales fell 19 percent to 165,877 vehicles in January, down from 204,707 vehicles in January 2005.Car sales fell 32.5 percent to 55,842 units from 82,710, while truck sales dropped 9.8 percent to 100,035 from 121,997 in the year-ago period.Sales of Ford brand vehicles fell 22 percent to 131,021 vehicles from 168,448 in the 2005 month.Ford 500 sales fell 51 percent to 3,526 vehicles, Focus sales fell 36 percent to 8,035, Explorer sales fell 26 percent to 8,876 and Escape sales fell 24 percent to 8,408.Sales of the automaker's top-selling F-Series trucks fell 15 percent to 44,919.Meanwhile, Expedition sales rose 16 percent to 6,143 and Fusion sales rose 5.3 percent to 10,529.Sales of Lincoln brand vehicles rose 2.7 percent to 9,594 from 9,345 in the year-ago month, while Mercury brand sales slid 1.4 percent to 12,604 from 12,781.Jaguar sales were off 13 percent at 1,390, compared to the year-ago month, while Land Rover sales were down 7 percent to 3,433 from 3,693. Volvo sales fell 12 percent to 7,808 from 8,844.Adjusted for one more selling day in this month compared with January 2005, Ford's sales fell 22 percent.Ford shares rose 8 cents to $8.21 in midday trading on the New York Stock Exchange.Copyright 2006 Associated Press.
