NEW YORK (AP) - Starwood Hotels announced a deal with Las Vegas Sands Corp. to build its biggest hotel ever in the Chinese enclave of Macau, the world's most lucrative gambling market.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc. of White Plains, N.Y., announced plans on Thursday to develop two hotels on Macau's Cotai strip: the 4,000-room Sheraton Macao Hotel, to open in 2008, and the 460-room St. Regis Hotel & Residences, which will also include 400 residential units. The St. Regis is scheduled to open in 2009.

Las Vegas Sands Chief Executive Sheldon Adelson -- the third-richest man in America according to Forbes magazine -- has helped Macau surpass Las Vegas as the biggest gambling market in the world. The company operates the Sands Macau there and plans to open The Venetian Macao Resort Hotel this summer.

The planned Sheraton Macao Hotel consists of two towers. In addition to the rooms, it will have five restaurants, more than 140,000 square feet of meeting space, two health clubs, a spa, and two outdoor swimming pools.

The Cotai Strip is an area of an area of reclaimed land between the islands of Taipa and Coloane in Macau.
