WHITEHOUSE STATION, N.J. (AP) - Drug developer Merck & Co. said Thursday its HIV drug candidate Isentress showed positive results in two late-stage clinical trials. The drug candidate, formerly known as MK-0518, was effective in reducing viral loads of HIV in more than 75 percent of patients in both Phase III clinical trials. The studies paired the drug candidate with a drug the patient had already been using and compared the effectiveness versus placebo and a treatment already in use by the patient, called optimized background therapy. The studies focused on patients who had failed antiretroviral therapies and who were resistant to at least one drug in each of the three classes of antiretroviral therapies.Merck plans to submit an application for the drug to the Food and Drug Administration during the second quarter.Shares of Merck fell 10 cents to $44.05 on the New York Stock Exchange in afternoon trading.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
