Freeport-McMoRan to offer $6B in notes |

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. said Thursday it will offer $6 billion in senior notes to the public.The offer will consist of two parts. The first will involve eight-year senior notes and the second will involve 10-year senior notes. Net proceeds from the offer will be used to fund part of the buyout of Phelps Dodge Corp.The closing of the notes offering is conditional on the Phelps Dodge buyout. Each company is holding a shareholders' meeting to vote on the proposal March 14.JP Morgan and Merrill Lynch are the joint book-running managers for the notes offering.Shares of Freeport-McMoRan fell $1.19, or 2.1 percent, to close at $56.22 on the New York Stock Exchange.
