WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal regulators said Monday they were conducting an inspection of a Southern Co. nuclear power plant in southeast Alabama after a valve failed earlier this year. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said a valve in a heat removal system at Southern's Farley Nuclear Plant failed during a test this year, and said the same valve also failed last year. While the problems did not impact plant operations and are not a threat to safety, repetitive failures required a special inspection, the NRC said.Shares of Southern Co. rose 18 cents to $37.97 in aftermarket trading, after falling 38 cents to close at $37.79 Monday on the New York Stock Exchange.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
