COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Medical products and services company Cardinal Health Inc. said on Monday that it is moving 700 jobs from its suburban Chicago office to its central Ohio headquarters. The move will bring Cardinal's medical and surgical supply distribution business to the same location as its pharmaceutical distribution unit, increasing over the next two years the number of positions at headquarters from approximately 2,700 to 3,400, Cardinal spokesman Jim Mazzola said. All 700 employees at Cardinal's Waukegan, Ill., office will be offered jobs in Ohio, he said. The company expects $45 million in costs to cover employee relocation, severance benefits and other transitional expenses, a Cardinal statement said.To house the extra employees, Cardinal plans to build a 250,000-square-foot facility next to its current headquarters in the Columbus suburb of Dublin, the statement said. The new building will hold 1,200 employees. The consolidation will enable Cardinal employees to share support functions, R. Kerry Clark, the company's chief executive, said in a statement.'Bringing these two similar businesses together into one location will result in a more streamlined organization and create more value for customers than either unit could accomplish alone,' Clark said.Cardinal plans to sell its property in Waukegan, but will lease space in the area to house its research and development labs and other local operations.A $2 billion medical products manufacturing segment, a packaging center that produces surgical kits, a major Midwest distribution center and customer sales, service and warehousing departments will remain in Illinois, the statement said.Cardinal is ranked No. 19 on the Fortune 500 and was Ohio's largest company in 2006, with $81.8 billion in revenue. It employs more than 40,000 people worldwide.Copyright 2007 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
