BRUSSELS (Thomson Financial) - Employees who started a week-long strike at Opel's Antwerp-based plant last week remain off the job until at least May 8, according to FGTB trade union official Rudi Kennes.

The employees had initially planned to return to work on Thursday, when the next meeting with the European management of GM will take place at the group's German headquarters in Russelsheim, but this meeting has been postponed.

Night and early morning shift workers went on strike after they learned Opel's parent company, General Motors Corp, plans to produce no more than 80,000 vehicles in Antwerp as of 2010 -- which they consider insufficient to compensate for the loss of the Opel Astra, which, as of 2010, will be produced at other plants.

On April 17, GM said it would make between 1,400 and 5,100 employees redundant before the summer, following a drop in Opel Astra sales.

GM also decided not to produce its new Astra model in Belgium as of 2010, but rather at other plants in Germany, Poland, Sweden and the UK.
