WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) - A jury found Ford Motor Co. responsible Thursday for the crippling injuries a Boca Raton woman suffered in a crash, awarding her and her husband nearly $10.4 million in damages.Donna Grimes, left a quadriplegic when her Ford Explorer was struck from behind in 2001, was not in court when the jury announced its verdict after about 11 hours of deliberation over three days. The 66-year-old's attorneys said the reclining mechanism in her seat failed, catapulting her backward and snapping her neck when her head hit the back seat.'The injuries sustained by our client were preventable,' said James Lowe, one of Grimes' attorneys.Ford said it likely would appeal and rejected the characterization that Grimes' injuries could have been avoided.'This crash was so severe,' said David Kelly, who represented the auto maker in the case. 'You can't avoid all injuries by seat design.'Copyright 2007 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
