LAS VEGAS (AP) - Casino giant MGM Mirage Inc. has signed a temporary extension of its contract with 21,000 hotel and restaurant workers who are members of the Culinary Workers Union, company and union officials said Thursday. The extension signed late Wednesday keeps the current contract in place until a new deal is brokered. The casino operator and the union have been negotiating the new contract since March.'Many subjects have been successfully settled. MGM Mirage is committed to the resolution of the remaining issues, and conclusion of a mutually beneficial contract as soon as possible,' Cynthia Kiser Murphey, MGM Mirage's senior vice president of human resources, wrote in a memo circulated to the media.Contract talks with the union's other major employer, Harrah's Entertainment Inc., continued Thursday, Culinary political director Pilar Weiss said. Weiss said the negotiations were expected to go into the night. Both contracts were due to expire late Thursday, along with collective bargaining agreements with smaller hotel and casino operators.Weiss said the union, which represents 60,000 workers, had sent letters to those operators requesting extensions.Under the MGM agreement, either party can cancel the extension with seven days notice, and any wage increases negotiated in the new deal will be retroactive to June 1, the parties said. The union is seeking increased opportunities for upward mobility, tip protection and agreements from the major operators that future properties will be covered under contract.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
