LONDON: Britons of south-east Asian origin generated a "staggering" 103 billion pounds a year in the U.K. economy, a recent study has found, even as most of them reached the coasts of Britain without anything -- money, home or language skills.
The study undertook by the Institute of Asian Professionals indicated that while Asians accounted for just 2.5 per cent of the country's population, they contributed as much as 10 per cent of its economic output. The institute has come out with an Asian Power List and it believes it is timely because most of these achievers are now feeling uncomfortable and their lives are under "intense scrutiny".
The institute's chairman Khalid Darr said the figures are quite staggering. "Many on the list arrived on these shores without a penny to their name, and they have built multi-million pound business empires.
"Entrepreneurship, coupled with a wonderful work ethic, fuelled with a desire to better oneself, is a potent force driving the British Asian business community."
The achievers in the list include steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal and Sir Gulam Noon, who has set a firm that produces 1.2 million ready-to-eat meals every week. The others who are known to have struggled to come up in life and record noticeable achievements are metropolitan police assistant commissioner Tarique Ghaffur, a key figure in the battle against terrorism, solicitor Imran Khan, who helped the family of murdered black teenager Stephen Lawrence fight for justice, Vodafone boss Arun Sarin, Lord New Look clothes chain founder Tom Singh, Kumars stars Meera Syal and Sanjeev Baskar and Bend it Like Beckham director Gurinder Chadha. Among them are Lords, entrepreneurs, financiers, scientists, lawyers, surgeons and community leaders and they are meeting in London today to discuss their contributions.
Mittal is worth 25 billion pounds this year as per Forbes estimates and is the third richest man in the world.
