MCLEAN, Va. (AFX) - Newspaper publisher Gannett Co. said Friday its December pro forma operating revenue rose 19.2 percent, benefiting from an extra week in the period.The company said the period ending Dec. 31 included an extra week. Without the extra week, total pro forma operating revenues would have been 1.6 percent higher.Total revenue rose to $757.3 million from $635.2 million in the previous year.Newspaper advertising revenue grew 17.5 percent due to a 19.2 percent climb in run of press (ROP) volume and a 13.6 percent increase in preprint distribution. Excluding the extra week, newspaper ad revenue would have been up 1.2 percent.Classified revenue gained 14.2 percent on a 20.4 percent rise in ROP ad volume. Real estate, employment and automotive ads all climbed. Classified revenue would have been flat without the extra week.Net paid circulation continued to slip, with daily papers posting a 2.1 percent decline and Sunday papers falling 1.5 percent.Broadcasting revenue grew 16.1 percent.Gannett shares rose 86 cents to $58.80 in morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange.Copyright 2006 Associated Press.
