DEERFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Drugstore operator Walgreen Co. said Friday its same-store sales rose 8.6 percent in February, lifted by strong pharmacy sales growth.Same-store sales, or sales in stores open at least one year, are a key measure of retail industry performance.The company said same-store pharmacy sales grew 10 percent, with prescriptions filled rising 5.7 percent. Same-store front-end, or non-prescription, sales climbed 6.1 percent during the month.Total sales in February grew 13.4 percent to $4.30 billion, from $3.79 billion last year, as pharmacy sales increased 14.3 percent and accounted for 64.4 percent of total monthly sales.For the latest six months, same-store sales grew 9.3 percent, while total sales rose 15.5 percent to $26.64 billion.Walgreen opened 30 stores in February, including three relocations, two acquisitions and two closures.
