SEOUL (XFN-ASIA) - LG Philips LCD said it has begun full-scale mass production at its LCD module plant in Poland, which it hopes will help boost its share of the European LCD TV market.

The plant, located in Kobierzyce, near Wroclaw in southwestern Poland, will produce modules mainly for 32-inch and larger LCD TVs, with annual production capacity seen to expand to 11 mln units by 2011 from the initial 3 mln.

LG Electronics currently operates an LCD TV plant nearby and Toshiba Corp, which has a 19.9 pct interest in the LG Philips LCD plant in Poland, is constructing an LCD TV plant in the vicinity, with production scheduled for August.

Royal Philips Electronics NV and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co also have TV plants in Hungary and the Czech Republic.

'The start of mass production and the establishment of a base in Poland have enabled LG Philips LCD to secure a strong foundation for mutual growth with our customers in the fast-growing European LCD TV market,' said Kwon Young-Soo, president & CEO of LG Philips LCD.

The Polish operations are part of LG Philips LCD's strategy to build a global production network to better meet customers' needs, which was initiated in May 2003 with the start of mass production at its module plant in Nanjing, China, the company said.

According to DisplaySearch, Europe, which accounted for 39.3 pct share of the worldwide LCD TV market on a unit basis last year, is projected to grow to 35.8 mln units by 2010.

LG Philips LCD is a joint venture between South Korea's LG Electronics and Philips.
