LONDON: Budget travellers, here's something to cheer about. You can get basic accommodation for 20 pounds a day in the heart of London.
There are no frills and no thrills, just a double cot, an air-conditioner and en-suite baths with towels. Everything else can be available, but for a price.
Low cost travel and life style company easyGroup Monday launched its latest budget venture, easyHotel in Earls Court in West London. Room tariff starts at 20 pounds a night. There is no bar, lounge or catering facilities and only three of the 34 rooms have tiny windows. Television could be available, but for 5 pounds for 24 hours. There will be a a reception desk, and a staff member will be in attendance.
easyGroup, headed by Stelios Haji-Ioannou, runs easyJet airline, easyCruise cruise operator, easyCar car hire company, and easyMobile mobile phone company. The company intends to open an easyHotel in Basel in Switzerland in September add more hotels in London and other cities of Britain.
The company had bought an old bed and breakfast for 2 million pounds, spent 1 million pounds in refurbishing it to make for the budget hotel. The rooms are categorised as "tiny" (60 sq ft), "very small" (0sq.ft.) and "small" (80 sq. ft.). Windows are optional and comes with a price.
Said Stelios after the launch: "There is a gap in the market between the unbranded bed and breakfast, and the branded chain hotels. The consumer is prepared to sacrifice space for a low price, and I am offering private and reliable accommodation, with all the rooms of the
same standard; there are no surprises."
