PARIS (AFX) - A specially designed TGV train manufactured by Alstom has set a new speed record for rail by reaching 574.8 km/hr in a special run organised on a new high-speed line in eastern France. The previous record of 515.3 km/hr was set by another TGV train in May 1990.Today's record for Alstom and French train operator SNCF is slightly below the 581 km/hr reached by Japan's Maglev prototype train in 2003, and which is not counted as an official record speed for trains. In addition to achieving a technological feat, the goal for Alstom is to show the prowess of the TGV high-speed train in the face of competition from Germany's ICE and Japan's Shinkansen.paris@afxnews.comafp/gt/jfrCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2007.
