AMSTERDAM (Thomson Financial) - Fugro NV said in a trading update that it expects to see sales rise to around 800 mln eur in the first half from 652 mln in the same period last year, and a net profit of over 70 mln eur, compared with 54.1 mln.

Fugro also said that the order backlog for the rest of the year is 'substantially higher' compared with last year.

The exploration and geological survey company said that the weak US dollar had an adverse effect of about 5 pct on sales in the first three months.

Fugro added that high demand for its services in the oil and gas industry is continuing, while the demand for surveys in the mining sector is also high.

Capacity utilisation rates of Fugro services are also high, especially in projects in the US and the Middle East.

Fugro said that it bought a number of companies in the first quarter with total combined sales of 65 mln eur, while the costs of the acquisitions were around 58 mln eur.

The company noted that the delivery of its Geo Barents seismic vessel has been delayed, and that the ship will commence operations from mid-May.
