Watson launches generic Biaxin XL drug |

CORONA, Calif. (AP) - Specialty pharmaceutical company Watson Pharmaceuticals Inc. launched a generic tablet Thursday aimed at treating or preventing bacterial infections.The company's new 500-mg Clarithromycin Extended-Release tablets are a generic version of Abbott Laboratories' Biaxin XL.Biaxin XL and generic versions of the antibiotic had about $200 million in sales for the year ended September 2007.Watson received Food and Drug Administration approval for its generic tablet on June 24, 2004.Watson's tablet was then tied up in a patent-infringement lawsuit filed by Abbott. The lawsuit was dismissed on July 12, 2007, with prejudice, meaning the complaint can't be refiled.Copyright 2007 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
