MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Best Buy Co. said Wednesday it will carry Apple Inc. computers in 200 stores by this fall after a successful test last year.

The nation's largest consumer electronics retailer has long carried iPods. But it stopped selling Apple computers in 1998 because sales were slow, and soon after Apple pulled out of most retailers.

Apple later started its own retail operation, and its 170 Apple stores draw heavy traffic and have been pivotal in boosting Mac sales. Adding Best Buy could bolster Apple's efforts to increase its share of the personal computer market, currently around 5 percent in the U.S.

Best Buy plans to have about 900 stores in the U.S. by the end of this year.

Apple officials have estimated that about half of its sales of computers at its own retail stores are from customers who are new to the Macintosh platform.

Best Buy vice chairman and Chief Executive Officer Brad Anderson said Best Buy had resisted selling Apple computers because of concerns they couldn't be sold profitably. But the test in 50 stores 'has worked out very well for those stores in terms of being able to find a way to serve that Apple customer, and growing the business in those stores.'
