LIVERPOOL: A Bluetooth-enabled internet telephone for Skype users, the TRENDnet Clearsky, will hit the markets in the U.K. in April.
The VoIP phone, manufactured by Elite Devices, will support Skype's features and can be connected to a PC via an advanced Bluetooth dongle using a USB port. Users can then make free calls over the internet to anywhere in the world within a radius of 100 metres of the PC. The phone can also display the names of listed friends who are online at any particular moment of time.
Elite Devices said the handset is expected to cost around 100 pounds.
TRENDnet Clearsky will use the latest version of Bluetooth – 2.0 – and the company will provide the appropriate Bluetooth 2.0 dongle along with the handset. The handset also supports all the latest functions offered by Skype.
At present, Skype users have the LAN Cordless DUALphone supplied by RTX. This phone can be used for any fixed line telephony as well as Skype via the PC's broadband connection. It uses the DECT technology instead of Bluetooth.
Elite Devices' Rone Pye said the new phone is very straightforward. "There's a display which makes it as easy as Skype software. It gives you a buzz when your contacts come online."
Elite Devices says the phone can also be used to make calls over IM software such as MSN Messenger and Yahoo! Messenger. It has a longer battery life than Wi-Fi phones, at 60 hours standby, and 6 hours talk time.
The handset now comes with a mono screen, but the company is planning a colour version soon.
