Novacea halts Phase III trial of prostate cancer drug on imbalance of deaths |

NEW YORK (Thomson Financial) - Novacea Inc. Monday said it had halted the Phase III clinical trial of its drug Asentar, an investigational prostate cancer therapy.The San Francisco-based pharmaceutical company said there was an 'imbalance of deaths' between the two treatment arms. Novacea, along with its partner Schering-Plough, plans to analyze the data in order to understand why there was a higher death rate in the group being treated with Asentar and Taxotere.The companies said they wouldn't end their development alliance.Shares of Novacea closed Friday at $7.19.Schering-Plough is a pharmaceutical based in Kenilworth, N.J.
