SYDNEY (XFN-ASIA) - Job advertisements in newspapers and on the Internet last month averaged of 209,429 per week, 0.1 pct less than in December but 21.8 pct more than a year before, Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Ltd (ANZ) said.In December, there were a revised 11.8 pct more job ads than in November, the preliminary estimate of the increase having been 12.1 pct.ANZ said the results of its monthly surveys showed that the trend was for newspaper job ads in major metropolitan newspapers to increase, with the number of job advertisements rising over the past four consecutive months by 1.9 pct, following two years of decline.But the bank said trend newspaper job ads last month remained 9.1 pct lower than at their most recent peak, in October 2004.Job advertisements in major metropolitan newspapers fell 1.2 pct last month to an average of 20,244 per week. They were a revised 3.7 pct higher in December than in November.Over the year to the end of last month, newspaper advertisements were up 1.2 pct.ANZ said Internet job advertisements had been steady last month when compared to December, at an average of 189,185 per week, but were 24.9 pct higher than a year before.Internet job ads were 12.8 pct higher in December than in November.ANZ head of Australian economics Tony Pearson said that the trend was for the increase in Internet job ads to pick up pace, with the monthly trend increase averaging 2.3 pct over the past four months, almost double the pace since the middle of last year.He said the decline in job advertisements throughout most of last year now seemed to have been reversed and that employment growth would accelerate over the coming months.'For employees this is excellent news, but for employers it suggests that labor market conditions will remain very tight,' Pearson said.paul.daniel@xfn.com
