BEIJING (AFX) - US drug maker Pfizer Inc has lost a bid to win the right to a popular Chinese translation of its male impotency drug Viagra, the Chinese High Court said on its website.Pfizer had filed a suit with the Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court arguing that it should be entitled to the use of the brand name 'Wei Ge,' chinacourt.org reported. However, in a recent ruling, the court said Guangzhou Welman, a Chinese anti-impotency drug maker which registered the brand name 'Wei Ge' with local authorities, should be allowed to keep it, according to the website. The fact that 'Wei Ge' was a commonly used Chinese translation for Viagra did not in itself give Pfizer the right to the brand name in China, the court ruled.Pfizer was awarded the patent for Viagra in China in 2003 but has been a frequent target of local imitators.Spokespeople at Pfizer's China operations were not immediately available to comment.afp/mb
