COPENHAGEN (AFX) - Novo Nordisk AS said it has signed an agreement with the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) to establish a joint research foundation in China.

The aim of the research foundation is to fund or co-fund activities of common interest in diabetes and biopharmaceuticals, including related disciplines and technologies such as protein chemistry, immunology, inflammation, toxicology, oncology, endocrinology and drug delivery.

Novo Nordisk will provide 2 mln usd for supporting research in diabetes and biopharmaceuticals.

'This cooperation illustrates the great attention Novo Nordisk pays to China as well as our long-term commitment to help in further developing the Chinese healthcare system,' said Mads Krogsgaard Thomsen, Novo Nordisk's chief science officer.

He added Novo Nordisk will continue to launch new products in China and increase the company's R&D presence in the country.

In Jan 2002, Novo Nordisk established an R&D centre in Beijing -- the first R&D centre in China to be established by an international biopharmaceutical company.

'We will get insight into Chinese research and ideas that we can use -- and first right of negotiating the commercialisation of promising ideas,' Krogsgaard Thomsen told daily Boersen.

The collaboration will also focus on protein-based medicines, which account for a third of all medicines and have sales growth three times that of traditional, chemical-based medicines, the daily said.
