FRANKFURT (AFX) - EU president Germany wants industrialised nations to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by at least 60 pct by 2050 in the fight against global warming, reported Handelsblatt newspaper, citing an EU draft paper.German Chancellor Angela Merkel is to propose the target at the EU summit in Brussels this week, added the report. The draft paper sets out the goal of reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) by between 60 and 80 pct in industrialised nations worldwide and a reduction of 30 pct in the EU by 2020, stated Handelsblatt. If EU leaders pass the proposal, Germany will present it to the world's most industrialised nations at a summit in Heiligendamm, northern Germany, in June. The 27 EU states agreed last month to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 20 pct by 2020, based on 1990 levels, or by up to 30 pct in the event of a new international agreement.krysia.diver@thomson.comafp/kd/jfrCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2007.
