BEIJING (XFN-ASIA) - US drug maker Pfizer Inc said in a company statement that it has filed an appeal after a local court denied it the right to a popular Chinese translation of its anti-impotency pill Viagra.'For almost 10 years 'wei ge' has been directly linked to Viagra in China and is recognised as a Pfizer trademark in other Asian countries,' the statement said. The Beijing First Intermediate People's Court in late December rejected Pfizer's claim of ownership of the name, which literally means 'big brother.'The court said Guangzhou Welman, a Chinese anti-impotency drug maker which registered the brand name 'wei ge' with local authorities, should be allowed to keep it.'The ruling fails to support Chinese efforts to create an environment of innovation that provides consistent protection of intellectual property rights for companies bringing new medicines to China,' Pfizer's statement said.afp
