YARDLEY, Pa. (AFX) - Journal Register Co. said Tuesday that its December advertising revenue grew 12.5 percent, benefiting from an extra week over the prior-year period.Advertising sales for the five-week period ending Dec. 31 climbed to $35.9 million from $31.9 million in the year-ago period.On a pro forma basis, ad revenue for the month rose 11.6 percent, with the Michigan area increasing 11 percent. Excluding the Michigan results, pro forma ad sales were up 11.9 percent compared to a year ago.Pro forma basis assumes all properties currently owned by the company were owned in both the current and year-ago periods.National ad revenue on a pro forma basis slipped 1.2 percent. Classified advertising revenue gained 14.3 percent during the month, while retail ad sales grew 11.7 percent. Retail sales gained on strength in department stores, services, medical/healthcare and sporting goods categories.December online sales surged 39.5 percent to $1.2 million on a pro forma basis.Full-year ad sales including discontinued operations fell 2.4 percent to $424.6 million from $435.1 million.Separately, Journal Register said it swung to a net loss in the fourth quarter.Copyright 2006 Associated Press.
