TOKYO (XFN-ASIA) - Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp plans to hire 1,600 new college graduates in spring 2008, a 12 pct increase from this coming spring and the most since the firm was created in 2001 through the merger of the former Sumitomo and Sakura banks, the Nikkei reported, without citing sources.The bank will hire 600 graduates to fill career-track positions, 500 for consumer service slots and 500 for general office work, the business daily said.Japan's third-largest bank is also raising starting salaries this spring for the first time in 14 years, offering some 205,000 yen per month for new workers in career-track jobs, an increase of 31,000 yen, it said.The bank plans to host roundtable discussions for interested students at the Tokyo International Forum on Feb 13-15, the report said.(1 usd = 120.12 yen)yasuhiko.seki@xfn.comys/mas
