CANBERRA (XFN-ASIA) - Australia will buy 24 Super Hornet fighter aircraft from Boeing Co for 6 bln aud, defense minister Brendan Nelson said.The planes would fill the fighter-bomber role on the retirement of Australia's fleet of F-111s after 2010 and ahead of the arrival of the Lockheed F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) from 2015, he said.'Australia remains fully committed to the JSF but the government is not prepared to accept any risk to air combat and strike capability during the transition to the JSF,' he told reporters.'The JSF is the most suitable aircraft for Australia's future combat and strike needs.'Australia, a key US military ally, plans to buy up to 100 of the F-35s from around 2015, making it the biggest military procurement project in Australian history.afp
