PARIS (Thomson Financial) - The conservative UMP party of Nicolas Sarkozy, the victor in France's presidential election according to official estimates, could gain a clear majority in next month's legislative elections, an Ifop opinion poll showed. The poll conducted on May 3-4 and published this evening gave the UMP party 34 pct of the vote, versus 29 pct for the socialist PS party, whose candidate Segolene Royal was beaten by Sarkozy in today's presidential run-off.The centre UDF party scored 12 pct in the poll, followed by the far-right Front National with 7 pct.No other party polled more than 5 pct in the survey.According to Jean-Luc Parodi of Ifop, these scores could produce one of the biggest-ever parliamentary majorities for the conservative right.France's legislative elections will take place over two rounds on June 10 and 17.tfn.paris@thomson.comafp/gt/wjCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2007.
