GENEVA (Thomson Financial) - Roche is recalling its AIDS virus treatment, Viracept, due to a 'chemical impurity', the Swiss pharmaceutical giant said in a statement. The recall concerns both powder and tablet forms of the drug, and is being carried out 'in agreement and cooperation with European and Swiss health authorities (EMEA and Swissmedic),' the group's statement said. The measures also concern 'some other world regions' not specified in the statement.Japan is not effected, nor is the US or Canada, where the drug is not distributed, it said.Roche said it had received several reports that 'some batches of Viracept 250mg tablets have a strange odour.''A detailed chemical analysis of the affected tablets showed they contain higher than normal levels of methane sulfonic acid ethylester,' it said.tf.TFN-Europe_newsdesk@thomson.comgpCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2007.
