MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Capella University said Wednesday that it has fired its financial aid director for violating the online school's code of business conduct by accepting consulting fees from a student loan company.Tim Lehmann had been on paid administrative leave since April following an internal review of Capella's financial aid practices confirmed that he was paid $12,400, including expenses, during the 2005-06 school year.Lehmann acknowledged accepting the consulting fees from Student Loan Xpress, which appeared on Capella's list of 15 preferred lenders.Lehmann also accepted money for speaking at loan industry events without approval by Capella, in violation of the school's policies, the investigation showed.Lehmann's telephone extention at the university was disconnected Wednesday and attempts to reach him for comment were unsuccessful. The consulting fees came to light as part of an investigation by the office of New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.Capella on Wednesday acknowledged that Lehmann had played an important role in the success of the university and its students.'However, following its internal review, and discovering that Mr. Lehmann knowingly violated the university's code of business conduct, Capella concluded that it is necessary to end its employment relationship with him,' the university said in a news release. While on leave, Lehmann assisted Capella with transition activities but wasn't involved in operations of the school's financial aid department. He will officially leave Capella this fall, when the transition is complete, the school said.Copyright 2007 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
