BOGOTA, Colombia (AFX) - An underground explosion in a central Colombia coal mine killed eight workers, just days after a similar blast in the nation's northeast killed 32 miners.Authorities had hoped to rescue some of the miners in Gameza, 110 miles north of Bogota, but officials confirmed late Tuesday that all had died.Yuby Cristancho, a spokeswoman for the Boyaca state police, said seven men and one woman died in the morning accident. The blast comes just three days after 32 miners were killed when an explosion caused by a buildup of methane gas tore through a coal mine in northeast Colombia. Many mines in this Andean nation are makeshift affairs with few or no safety procedures. Coal is Colombia's second largest legal export after oil.Copyright 2006 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
