NEW YORK (AP) - Pfizer Inc. said Wednesday that U.S. regulators gave its drug Lipitor expanded approval for use to reduce the risk of nonfatal heart attacks, fatal and nonfatal strokes and in heart surgery. The drug was first approved by the Food and Drug Administration as a cholesterol-reducing treatment. The new approval means it can be used in patients at high risk for cardiovascular conditions because of prior heart attack, heart surgery or chest pain with evidence of clogged arteries.More than 15 million Americans have a history of coronary heart disease, Pfizer said, and this year about 300,000 Americans will have a recurrent heart attack.Shares of Pfizer rose 26 cents to $25.44 on the New York Stock Exchange in morning trading.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
