Novartis to focus on hepatitis drugs in China - report

BEIJING (XFN-ASIA) - Novartis sees China as an increasingly important market for its hepatitis drugs, Interfax news agency reported, citing Novartis chairman and CEO Daniel Vasella.

'We will be launching a product for hepatitis B this year as it is a prevalent disease in China, with about 20 mln people infected. We have been growing over 20 pct on average in the past five years and we have gained considerable market share,' the agency cited Vasella as saying.

He said China's total pharmaceutical sector should grow to about 25 bln usd in 2010 from around 12 bln now.

Swiss-based Novartis, the world's fourth largest pharmaceutical firm, recently announced it would invest about 100 mln usd in R&D in China, with no specific timeframe provided.
