LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AFX) - Department store chain Dillard's Inc. said Thursday its sales at stores open at least a year, called same-store sales, fell 3 percent in January.Analysts on average were expecting a more modest decline of 1.2 percent, according to a poll by Thomson Financial. Same-store sales, which reflect business from stores open at least a year, are an important measure of retail industry performance.Total sales for the five weeks ended Feb. 3 were $623.6 million. Excluding the extra week in the 2007 retail calendar, January sales declined 2 percent compared with the four weeks ended Jan. 28, 2006.Same store-sales fell 4 percent during the 13-week period that ended Jan. 27.Total sales for the 14 weeks ended Feb. 3 were $2.4 billion. Without the extra week, sales declined 3 percent compared with the year-ago period.Sales for the 53 weeks ended Feb. 3 totaled $7.65 billion.Excluding the extra week, both total and same-store sales declined 1 percent compared with the prior year.Copyright 2006 Associated Press.
