SECAUCUS, N.J. (AFX) - Children's apparel maker The Children's Place Retail Stores Inc. on Thursday said same-store sales rose 3 percent in January.Same-store sales, or sales in stores open at least one year, are a key retail industry measure of performance.Analysts polled by Thomson Financial expected same-store sales to rise 2.3 percent.Same-store sales for the five-week period ended Feb. 3 fell 6 percent at Children's Place stores and rose 27 percent at Disney Stores.Total sales for the five-week period grew 46 percent to $127.2 million, compared with $87 million in the four-week year-ago period.In the fourth-quarter, same-store sales rose 6 percent, including a 3 percent rise at The Children's Place and a 14 percent gain at the Disney Store.Total sales for the 14-week fourth quarter rose 20 percent to $645 million, from $539.7 million in the 13-week quarter a year ago.For the year, same-store sales grew 11 percent, as Children's Place same-store sales rose 10 percent and Disney Store same-store sales rose 14 percent.Total sales in the 53-week fiscal 2006 rose 21 percent to $2.02 billion, from $1.67 billion in the 52-week fiscal 2005.As of Feb. 3, the company owned and operated 866 The Children's Place stores and 328 Disney Stores in North America and The Children's Place online store.Copyright 2006 Associated Press.
