NATICK, Mass. (AFX) - BJ's Wholesale Club Inc., the nation's No. 3 retail warehouse club, said Thursday its January same-store sales rose 3.5 percent.Analysts polled by Thomson Financial expected a same-store sales increase of 1.5 percent.Same-store sales -- sales at stores open at least a year -- are a key measure of retail activity.Sales increased in all five weeks with the strongest gain in week one. BJ's said sales were strongest in Metro New York and softest in the Southeast.Total sales for the month rose 8.5 percent to $724.2 million from $667.7 million in 2006.Sales of food rose 4 percent, while general merchandise sales increased about 3 percent with more markdowns in clothing, furniture and televisions.During the fourth quarter same-store sales rose 1.5 percent, and total sales rose 6 percent to $2.4 billion.Full-year same-store sales rose 1.2 percent.
