DALLAS (AFX) - Newspaper and TV media company Belo Corp. on Thursday said newspaper advertising revenue declined 4.1 percent in December on a steep falloff in general, retail and classified ads.

By newspaper, advertising revenue fell 4.2 percent at the Dallas Morning News, 6.8 percent at the Press-Enterprise (Riverside, Calif.) and 1.8 percent at the Providence Journal.

Traditional newspaper companies have been struggling with tough competition from new media and Internet companies for a slice of the advertising pie.

Overall, retail ad revenue slipped 8.6 percent, while general ad revenue plummeted 19.2 percent. Classified ad revenue was down 5.8 percent as sales of automotive ads plunged 17.5 percent and real estate advertising declined as well. Employment classified ad revenue edged up 0.8 percent.

Total revenue from the newspaper and television groups dipped 0.7 percent in December.

For the full year, newspaper advertising revenue fell 1.9 percent. Total revenue from both groups rose 4.1 percent in 2006 versus 2005.

The 2006 period included an additional Sunday compared with the 2005 period.
