BUCHAREST (AFX) - Finmeccanica unit Alenia Aeronautica has declared its surprise at the decision by Romanian authorities to cancel its offer to tender for seven military aircraft, which had also been contested by EADS CASA Spain. In a statement the group said the decision was unjust and has caused them serious damages, even though they observed the requirements set out by the Romanian defence ministry. Moreover the company said that their offer was most definitely lower than that of EADS CASA Spain, with a difference between the two of around 42.2 mln eur.Announcing its intention to register a complaint against the decision, Alenia said it hoped that with Romania's entry into the European Union in January the Romanian institutions would examine the issue objectively.A government agency in charge of checking the legality of tenders announced last week that the award was seen to be in contravention of the principles of non-discrimination and transparency and said a new invitation to tender would be announced soon. The ministry of defence announced in December that Alenia had received the invitation to tender for seven military transport aircraft for a total of 220 mln eur.According to the secretary of state Ioan Ion, the C-27J Spartan plane proposed by the Italian group met the various criteria required by the ministry while the C-295, which was proposed by EADS, was disqualified because it did not satisfy certain technical conditions.EADS, however, has disputed this argument.newsdesk@afxnews.comafp/rar/ambCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2006.
