Ranbaxy gets generic Zoloft approval |

NEW YORK (AFX) - Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals Inc., a subsidiary of generic drug developer Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd., said Thursday it received Food and Drug Administration approval to make generic Zoloft.The antidepressant turned out to be a blockbuster drug for Pfizer Inc., but that company recently lost patent protection for the drug. Privately held, India-based Ranbaxy said it will immediately launch its version of the Sertraline Hydrochloride tablets in various doses.Several other companies have received generic approval for Zoloft, including Barr Pharmaceuticals and Mylan Laboratories. Teva Pharmaceuticals Industries Ltd. was the first to launch a generic version as part of an exclusivity period.Shares of Pfizer fell 7 cents to $26.45 on the New York Stock Exchange in afternoon trading.Copyright 2006 Associated Press.
