FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - Regional department store chain Gottschalks Inc. said Thursday its same-store sales, or sales at stores open at least one year, fell 3.6 percent in February.Same-store sales are a key measure of retail performance.Total sales for the month also dropped 3.8 percent to $42.6 million from $44.3 million a year ago.President and Chief Executive Jim Famalette said home store merchandise sales were soft in February, and a cosmetics event held in February last year will be held in March this year. Famalette added that shoes, dresses and higher-end sportswear performed best during the period.The company, which operates 60 department stores and 5 specialty apparel stores in six western states, noted it operated three fewer stores this period than in February of last year.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
