Rite Aid February same-store sales rise |

CAMP HILL, Pa. (AP) - Rite Aid Corp., which operates a national chain of retail drugstores, said Thursday its same-store sales in February rose 2.2 percent, driven by gains in pharmacy business.Analysts polled by Thomson Financial forecast a same-store sales gain in the month of 3.3 percent. Same-store sales, or sales in stores open at least a year, are considered a key indicator of retail performance.For the five-week period ended March 3, same-store pharmacy sales increased 3.2 percent, while front-end same-store sales gained 0.4 percent.Total drugstore sales in the period increased 2.6 percent to $1.73 billion from $1.69 billion during the same month a year ago. The company said prescription revenue accounted for 64.3 percent of drugstore sales, while third-party prescription revenue represented 95.6 percent of pharmacy sales.Same-store sales in the fiscal fourth quarter advanced 3 percent. Total drugstore sales declined 4.4 percent to $4.54 billion from $4.75 billion. The quarter included one week less than the same quarter a year earlier.Fiscal year same-store sales improved 3.4 percent, while total drugstore sales rose 1.4 percent to $17.42 billion from $17.19 billion.Rite Aid shares rose 4 cents to $5.90 in premarket trading.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
