TAIPEI (XFN-ASIA) - China Airlines (2610.TW) will launch a 200 mln usd cabin upgrade project for its fleet of 15 Boeing 747 passenger jets in the second half of 2008, the Economic Daily News reported, citing company chairman Philip Wei.The upgrade, which aims to greatly enhance the Taiwan carrier's competitiveness in the international air travel market, is expected to be completed in 2010.Wei said while China Airlines has yet to finalize what aircraft to order for its next-generation fleet of long-haul passenger jetliners, it has decided to rule out the Boeing 777 from the list of candidates.Of the newly launched long-haul aircraft now available in the market, he said the Boeing 747-8 and the A380 of Airbus belong to the same category in that they are both designed to accommodate more than 400 people.Meanwhile, the Boeing 787 and the A350 share the same category in that they carry less than 400 people, he said.He said China Airlines will likely choose one aircraft each from both categories.Wei said his company has no plans to invest in any other air cargo company after having secured a 25 pct stake in Yangtze River Express Airlines, a subsidiary of China's Hainan Air group, for about 40 mln usd.philip.wang@afxasia.com
