BERLIN (Thomson Financial) - General Motors said it will keep its Opel plant in Antwerp, Belgium open for at least the next two years after reaching a deal with trade unions. The company said the plant will produce up to 120,000 units per year -- roughly half its current output of 220,000-250,000 units per year -- of two new models aimed at the European market.Workers at the Antwerp plant had feared production would be cut to 80,000 cars per year as part of a production shake-up for the next generation of GM's Opel Astra model.Workers went on strike last week after GM announced plans last month to axe 1,400 jobs. The company cited a lack of demand as the reason to cut production levels and job numbers.tf.TFN-Europe_newsdesk@thomson.comafp/ms1COPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2007.
