AKRON, Ohio (AP) - FirstEnergy Corp. is seeking a rate increase for subsidiaries Toledo Edison, Ohio Edison and the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co. for the first time in a decade.The Akron-based company on Tuesday asked the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio for a distribution rate increase of 10 percent for Toledo Edison customers, 8 percent for Ohio Edison users and 6 percent for CEI customers. The increase would cost customers of the three subsidiaries $334 million a year.If approved, the rates would go into effect Jan. 1, 2009, for Toledo Edison and Ohio Edison customers. The new CEI rates would begin in May 2009. It would be the first increase in base rates since 1990 for Ohio Edison customers and 1996 for CEI and Toledo Edison customers.Copyright 2007 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
